"The European Super League is a dangerous concept" - Javier Tebas
The La Liga President pointed out the dangers of a closed league and explained the successful model of the Spanish league
The Thinking Football Stage auditorium, at the Super Bock Arena - Pavilhão Rosa Mota, was crowded to hear Javier Tebas, President of LaLiga, a talk moderated by Ignacio Gallardo, Director of the newspaper Marca.
Javier Tebas pointed out the risks of creating a European Super League. "European Super League is a dangerous concept and one that worries me. The richest clubs want to rule Football and set quotas. There must be balance between all the clubs. Look at La Liga, we've achieved that balance. The political authorities themselves have already expressed their opposition to a model in which the richest people rule. Europe is the best example of this equilibrium. This project will destroy itself. Football thrives on the feeling of belonging to the clubs and we cannot lose that feeling," concluded the La Liga president.
Javier Tebas began his speech by explaining the successful model of La Liga and the growth that the Spanish leagues have experienced in recent years. "We met with the clubs and put this project in place. Today we have 30,000 employees and clients such as Disney and EA Sports. The new sponsorship deal, with EA Sports, secures us a great sponsor. They will be our technological partner," said Javier Tebas.
The La Liga president also spoke about the current models for centralising media rights. "We have to question whether exclusivity still works. We have a model that does not contemplate exclusivity. Our future increasingly involves working with more operators, with a non-exclusive nature", he concluded.
