Al-Nassr signs Esports player for record-breaking fee
João Afonso, world champion in FIFA and EA Sports FC, known as "Jafonso," has made history with the most expensive transfer ever in the world of virtual sports by signing with Al-Nassr and the Italian organization Mkers.
The 20-year-old from Madeira left Luna Galaxy Esports, a team owned by Portuguese international and Liverpool player Diogo Jota, to embrace a new challenge in Saudi Arabia.
The transfer was completed for €140,000, corresponding to the release clause of the young athlete, setting a record in the world of Esports. Jafonso was officially unveiled alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, holding the Al-Nassr jersey, as the club recently launched its Esports division in partnership with Mkers.
Having extended his contract with Luna Galaxy until 2026 just last September, the player expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had with his former team. In a message on social media, he thanked Diogo Jota and coach Armando, highlighting their influence on his development.
Simultaneously, Jafonso announced that he is now represented by Polaris Sports, the agency led by Jorge Mendes, becoming the first Esports athlete to join its structure. Polaris also revealed plans to explore the Esports market further in partnership with Luna Galaxy.
This Monday, the world champion begins his international season in London, competing in the first round of the FC Pro 25 Open under Al-Nassr’s crest while aiming to qualify for the next World Championship.
With this historic transfer, Jafonso cements his position as one of the leading figures in virtual football, taking a significant step towards elevating the competitive Esports landscape to a global level.
