Artur Jorge and Botafogo’s transformation: “The competitiveness surprised me"

At the Thinking Football Summit, Artur Jorge, coach of Botafogo, shared his insights on "competitive density"—a growing theme in modern football, particularly in leagues with intense match schedules. He highlighted how this concept is shaping the game by challenging the physical endurance, mental resilience, and tactical flexibility of both players and coaches. Jorge described this intense match frequency as a double-edged sword: while it puts pressure on teams, it also serves as a source of motivation and growth.

Reflecting on his journey to Botafogo, Artur Jorge mentioned that after winning the Allianz CUP with SC Braga and gaining experience in the UEFA Champions League, he was approached by investor John Textor to take on a new project in Brazil. He recounted that, from the very beginning, he and his staff were thoroughly evaluated. This success with Braga convinced him to accept the new challenge, and since his arrival, Jorge has been surprised by the heightened competitiveness of the Brazilian championship: "It’s much more than I imagined."

Botafogo’s reality includes an average of more than seven matches per month, surpassing the intensity of many European leagues. This competitive density, Jorge explained, forced him to implement a methodology focused on preparation and recovery: “It makes us better prepared for the current reality, and also gives us the ability to benefit from having a well-structured club, with a great recovery department, physiology, and medical staff. These aspects are essential given the short time between games—sometimes just two or three days apart.” His team’s ability to adapt to this schedule, coupled with the right support structures, has been key to handling the pressure.

Upon taking the helm at Botafogo, Jorge realized the importance of moving past the disappointments of the previous season, when the team missed out on the title after leading the league for several months. His goal was to shift the team’s mindset towards the future, while using past experiences as valuable lessons. He noted that while a title isn’t yet guaranteed, the transformation at the club is evident, with a renewed sense of focus and determination.

Jorge also touched on the infrastructural challenges at Botafogo, acknowledging that the club's facilities lag behind those of their rivals. However, John Textor's arrival has brought significant improvements, not only in terms of resources but also in the human aspect of the project. Furthermore, Jorge praised Botafogo’s passionate fan base, around four million strong, for their unwavering support, both at home and on the road. This dedication, he believes, is a vital part of the club's ongoing growth and success.
