How much does a club pollute? UEFA launches its own Carbon Footprint Calculator
The fight against climate change is everyone's responsibility, and football is no exception. As part of the Football Sustainability Strategy 2030 'Strength through Unity,' in the pursuit of a reduced and sustainable environmental impact on the sport and everything associated with it, UEFA has introduced a Carbon Footprint Calculator.
The tool, designed to calculate carbon emissions in the areas of mobility, facilities, goods and services, and logistics within the context of sports, aims to enable clubs, federations, associations, and leagues to understand their environmental impact. Consequently, they can create an action plan to reverse scenarios.
According to the organization overseeing football at the European level, "the environmental impact of football is mainly related to event organization, as well as the construction and management of infrastructure, travel impacts, transportation, energy, and waste management." All these areas are taken into account by the calculator, allowing stakeholders to access a more real and transparent set of information. This, in turn, enables the calculation of progress, comparison of realities, and the definition of more precise measures, tailored to specific contexts.
The methodology used, based on international standards for measuring direct and indirect emissions, resulted from the contributions of a working group involving national associations - OEFB from Austria, DBU from Denmark, FFF from France, DFB from Germany, LFV from Liechtenstein, KNBV from the Netherlands -, clubs - Arsenal FC, AS Roma, Eintracht Frankfurt, Mainz 05, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Olympique Lyonnais, FC Porto, Real Betis, RB Leipzig, Southampton FC, VfB Stuttgart, and VfL Wolfsburg - and the Premier League. External and independent consultants in this process included Ariela Carielo, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Accounting, Bocconi University, Sport Positive, UL EHS Sustainability, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
With this tool for the future, UEFA also aims to demonstrate to various entities that football and its diverse actors can be part of the solution in the fight for a more sustainable future.
